History of the R50

The Mercedes-Benz CLR Le Mans was developed to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans under the FIA GT1 prototype regulations of 1999.

Development began in 1998 with Mercedes partnering with Isdera and Joest Racing to create a next-generation prototype combining German engineering excellence with proven racing expertise.

The CLR made its competitive debut at the 1999 Le Mans 24 Hours, competing against other manufacturers in the prestigious endurance racing championship.

Production ceased in 1999 as the FIA introduced new regulations that redirected Mercedes' prototype racing programs toward future Le Mans Prototype campaigns.
